I’ve got a running joke with my kids about the Jason DeRulo hit, ‘Trumpets.’ We’ve changed the words to “Every time I turn on the radio, I hear this song comin’ out from the radio…”
Jason’s pop song is on high rotation on a lot of radio stations at the moment, and it’s driving us a little koo-koo. Yesterday in the car, in a bid to escape DeRulo and his memories about “a Katy Perry song”, I flicked the buttons to change the channel, only to hear “…and the drums they swing low, and the trumpets they go…“, before skipping to a third channel where Jase was being reminded “of a Coldplay song”.
My summer wardrobe has been a bit like that.
If you’d passed me on the street over the last month or two, it’s likely you’d have seen me in a variation of the following: Denim shorts or a black leather skirt teamed with a grey or white tank, blouse or T, and hair scooped into a haphazard up-do or in beachy waves (translation: kinda messy).
Grey, black, white, denim and messy have been on high rotation in my wardrobe all summer. And just like Jason DeRulo’s omnipresent earworm of a song, I’m well and truly over it.
The change of seasons is always a good time to shake up your wardrobe and mix things up a bit. But if you’ve fallen into a bit of a fashion rut recently like me, you’re gonna need a bit of a push. Or a dare.”
Yup, the Fox in Flats Style Dare is back for the month of March – cue trumpets! Designed to inspire our style, and supported by a bunch of tips and ideas, this new Style Dare will help us all to try new trends, experiment with our wardrobes, and kick-start our style mojos over the next 31 days.
As lots of us have already discovered over the past two and a half years that we’ve run Style Dares on Fox in Flats, they’re a fun and easy way to inspire the way we dress each day. They challenge us to try things we might ordinarily dismiss. They push us to rummage through our wardrobes and rediscover items we haven’t worn in ages. And they force us to be more creative.
By the end of the month, you’re pretty much guaranteed to have rejuvenated your wardrobe (without necessarily spending any money!), and you’ll feel more confident about your personal style.
Here’s a load of tips, ideas and inspiration for each day of this Style Dare
1. Sparkles

2. Braid
It’s time to stop being afraid of the braid! We’ll hold your hand with loads and loads and loads of easy braid ideas and tutorials for every hair type here. Every single one of us is creative. And so for this Dare, we’re getting creative with new and unexpected combinations (what better way to break a long-standing habit?!). Start by grabbing your single, all-time favourite thing to wear. Now rummage around for something to wear with it that you’ve NEVER teamed it with before. This might take a few tries, but keep Rubiks-cubing until you have a brand new combination that works. Then do the same with shoes. And accessories. BAM! New outfit.
5. Hair accessory
A clever and cute clip, a ribbon, a headband or a hat… adorn your locks today.
6. Geek Chic
Think all buttoned up and collared with thick-rimmed glasses (or at least a studious face), with a library book at the ready. Extra points if the book is about HTML.
7. Boots

8. Leather
