“Every time that you get undressed
I hear symphonies in my head
I wrote this song just looking at you oh, oh
Yeah the drums they swing low
And the trumpets they go
And the trumpets they go
Yeah the trumpets they go
Da da, da ra ra da, da, da
Da, ra, ra, ra, da, da
Da da, da ra ra da, da, da
Da, ra, ra, ra, da, da”
I’ve got a running joke with my kids about the Jason DeRulo hit, ‘Trumpets.’ We’ve changed the words to “Every time I turn on the radio, I hear this song comin’ out from the radio…”
Jason’s pop song is on high rotation on a lot of radio stations at the moment, and it’s driving us a little koo-koo. Yesterday in the car, in a bid to escape DeRulo and his memories about “a Katy Perry song”, I flicked the buttons to change the channel, only to hear “…and the drums they swing low, and the trumpets they go…“, before skipping to a third channel where Jase was being reminded “of a Coldplay song”.
My summer wardrobe has been a bit like that.
If you’d passed me on the street over the last month or two, it’s likely you’d have seen me in a variation of the following: Denim shorts or a black leather skirt teamed with a grey or white tank, blouse or T, and hair scooped into a haphazard up-do or in beachy waves (translation: kinda messy).
Grey, black, white, denim and messy have been on high rotation in my wardrobe all summer. And just like Jason DeRulo’s omnipresent earworm of a song, I’m well and truly over it.
The change of seasons is always a good time to shake up your wardrobe and mix things up a bit. But if you’ve fallen into a bit of a fashion rut recently like me, you’re gonna need a bit of a push. Or a dare.”
Yup, the Fox in Flats Style Dare is back for the month of March – cue trumpets! Designed to inspire our style, and supported by a bunch of tips and ideas, this new Style Dare will help us all to try new trends, experiment with our wardrobes, and kick-start our style mojos over the next 31 days.
As lots of us have already discovered over the past two and a half years that we’ve run Style Dares on Fox in Flats, they’re a fun and easy way to inspire the way we dress each day. They challenge us to try things we might ordinarily dismiss. They push us to rummage through our wardrobes and rediscover items we haven’t worn in ages. And they force us to be more creative.
By the end of the month, you’re pretty much guaranteed to have rejuvenated your wardrobe (without necessarily spending any money!), and you’ll feel more confident about your personal style.
Here’s a load of tips, ideas and inspiration for each day of this Style Dare

4. Never worn it this way
Every single one of us is creative. And so for this Dare, we’re getting creative with new and unexpected combinations (what better way to break a long-standing habit?!). Start by grabbing your single, all-time favourite thing to wear. Now rummage around for something to wear with it that you’ve NEVER teamed it with before. This might take a few tries, but keep Rubiks-cubing until you have a brand new combination that works. Then do the same with shoes. And accessories. BAM! New outfit.
5. Hair accessory
A clever and cute clip, a ribbon, a headband or a hat… adorn your locks today.
6. Geek Chic
Think all buttoned up and collared with thick-rimmed glasses (or at least a studious face), with a library book at the ready. Extra points if the book is about HTML.
They’re more evergreen than you’d think. Put ‘em to work regardless of the temps. If it’s hot where you live – no excuses! We’ve got 15 ways to wear boots in when it’s warm here.
Or pleather. For pants or skirts, team with soft, baggy and touchable tops for day. You already know what to do for night.
Remember when you were? You can be again. Strap on some imaginary wings, and get all ethereal. Try white, glossy eyelids and rims, floaty fabrics, and even a garland of flowers in your hair. *sigh*
And we don’t mean that 20-second scraped back pony, nor the one you usually do. Today, you’re going to try something different. Click here for 7 easy ways to pimp your pony.
Try bracelets, cuffs and a wristwatch dancing together on your wrist, or a pile of wrapped up necklaces. Click here for tips on how to create a great ‘Arm Party’ and here for ideas on how to layer your favourite neck bling.
Clueless, Melrose, Reality Bites – they all had something else going for them beyond a clutch of memorable quotes: that’s right, the fashion.
It’s THE print trend for 2014, so here’s your excuse for a touch of shopping. Or if you’re steering clear of the shops this month, try painting your nails, lips, or even your hair with a splash of bright colour.
Time to dust off that treasure from the antique store, that special something from your Grandma, or a pre-loved bargain. For tips on bagging a thrift store score, click here.
15. Sex and the City
Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte, or Miranda. Play dress-ups by channeling your fave SATC character and making like their (even cooler) cousin.
Eschew the elastic and the velcro. Today you’re gonna tie it up to make it hot.
As a nod to St Pat of course!
18. Your Style Icon
We’ve all got a hero, or at least, a person whose unique style we really love. Choose yours and pay tribute.
19. Orange Lipstick
Spotted on the catwalk at Donna Karan, Prabal Gurung, Christian Siriano, Rag & Bone, and DKNY, it’s one of the hottest makeup trends of the season. The kicker? It’ll whiten your teeth, and wake up your whole look. Try Revlon Orange Flip, MAC Morange, or AVON Tangerine Tango.
This wardrobe classic will always make an outfit look polished. For 8 ways to take your blazer from the Boardroom to the Playroom, click here.
Your bugle beaded dress, that chunky resin necklace, the bag strewn with glass, or that stack of wooden bracelets. Enjoy the clinking, clunking, clatter.
Get crafty and creative and customise. It’s good to have a project.
24. BIG hair
Pump up the volume! Because we all know that size really does matter. Plenty of big hair inspo here.
Whether it’s as simple as a sweet-smelling frangipani tucked behind your ear on the way to the beach, or one of the latest floral fabrics, it’s time to get your bloom on. Find 7 ideas on how to work flowers into your outfit here
Soft and snuggly, indeed. But today, wear it beyond your comfort zone. And expect extra cuddles.
27. Fabulous Flats
French style icon Inès de La Fressange went on the record to say “Finally, people understand one doesn’t need to wear high heels to look sexier.“ But you already knew that, right? So today, flaunt your most fabulous flats, you fox.
28. Cat’s Eyes
The sunglass shape du jour and a hot makeup trend this season. So bust out your black liquid eyeliner and get your kitty on. Click here for tips and ideas on how to master the look.
It’s the shoe shape that should be on the tip of your toes. Showcase your favourites, or get to the point another way.
30. The Wild West
Think luxe leather fringing, a sexy bandana, or your favourite cowboy boots. Toy pistols and handcuffs optional.
Gold, silver or bronze. Whichever you choose, it’ll be a winner.
