Closet Classic: The White Blazer

By Tegan Taylor

When we surveyed nearly 150 mums from around the world, we found a whopping 78% of you wished you had more money to spend on clothes. We say that’s all the more reason to choose investment pieces that are going to work for multiple occasions.

One of these investment pieces no wardrobe should be without? A great blazer. It’s a classic piece that works with almost any outfit, whether it’s for a night out on the town, a business meeting or a slide at the playground with the kids. Make it a white blazer and you step up the style stakes even further.

Now, wearing white can be a scary undertaking, especially when you have young kids. The nappy changes… the nose wiping… the Vegemite hands… donning a white garment can feel like you’re pinning a big “stain me” sign on yourself. That’s why wearing white on your outer layer is the best way to go: you can roll up your sleeves or slip the blazer off when mess is imminent. And if you do end up in stains-ville, you can use stain removers and bleaches without worrying about fading colours or erasing prints.

Business

The office is the natural habitat of the blazer, and with good reason. A well-fitting blazer, with its sharp lines, adds polish and professionalism to an outfit. Worn over a tailored dress, slacks or pencil skirt, a blazer in a crisp white is the final touch that says “she’s the boss”.

Night out

Unlike her straight-laced sister, Suit Jacket, Little Miss White Blazer knows how to par-tay! She sings against sequins and makes bright colours pop, brings a classy tuxedo feel to black and is so, so cool layered with more white.

Been slobbing around at home with the kids and realise you need to dash out the door? Chuck your new wardrobe favourite over your worn-out t-shirt, boyfriend jeans and flats and you might just get mistaken for a fashion blogger.

Now, confession time: how many blazers do you have in your wardrobe already?

(I’ve just counted 7, and our Editor Andrea has confessed to 13. She said if you’ve got more she’ll see you in blazer-rehab…)

  • I think my Blazer Number falls somewhere between yours and Andrea’s…but I do find my white blazer gets the least amount of wear. I need to get over it and get it on!

    • FoxInFlats

      Get it ON Sonia! xA

Have to agree that blazers are so versatile and there’s something very sexy about a well worn blazer.

Don’t have a white one though – don’t know how I would keep it clean!

      Indeed, love them!

I’ve discovered that if I wear it with a light scarf, it stops that grubby neck thing. I wash my neck! Why does this always happen! 🙂 Anyway, try that.

I’m keeping an eye out for blazers in the shops at the moment for summer as the new stock comes through. I seem to really need that structure and I feel smarter-dressed in one. Now I don’t wear suits to work, I’ve raided my suit jacket for winter and it’s worked well. I’ll be on the lookout for a white-ish jacket for summer. Gwyneth Paltrow wears one so well! Thanks for the tips, Andria!

Love my white (well, cream really) blazer: so fresh and unexpected and less “suit”. I have one from Metalicus that I wear over dresses to work and with jeans and heels for partying. Then I throw it in the washing machine- winner

    • FoxInFlats

Wait, what? You throw it in the machine>>>! I need your jacket!

      • Johanne Taylor

Yep. Lingerie bag it, and wash in cold water on a normal cycle. Get onto it!
