Because when you’re a walking, talking entertainment centre, you need a wardrobe that fits the job description.
As mums, we are often walking, talking entertainment centres for our kids. Doctors’ waiting rooms, checkout queues and even rainy days indoors are all potential sites for a kiddo to run amok… unless you can step in with a playful distraction first.
We’ve talked before about the wearable playground to distract lap-bound babies — now here’s a stack more ways to dress for child-entertaining success. (PS. These clothes are pretty fun for mums to wear, too!)
Busy patterns
- Play I Spy and see what shapes they can imagine in the fabric (like cloud-watching, but on your clothes!)
- Tell stories about the pictures in the prints
Have a play with:
Twist & Tango smudgy print top $68.16
A long swishy skirt
- Play peekaboo: babies and young toddlers will be enthralled with this game far longer than you are
- Sing rockabye baby: if your baby is small enough and your skirt fabric strong enough, try making a “cradle” in your skirt and rocking them while singing this classic nursery rhyme. Older bubs love the pretend “fright” of feeling like they might fall — as long as they trust that mum will always catch them!
- If the venue allows, put your bub or toddler on the ground and swish your skirt over them. Just make sure your hems are clean!
Have a play with:
Traffic People maxi dress $73.90
Jarlo colour block maxi dress $147.81
ASOS tie-die maxi skirt $49.27
Spots, sequins, stars and more
- Practise counting. (Even if your toddler counts like mine: “Two, two, two… two!”)
- Sing the Play School classic “Put a spot over here, put a spot over there” (Take a trip down memory lane with this vintage Play School clip)
Have a play with:
Michael Kors star print denim shirt $55.84
Sister Jane top with flowers $78.83
One Teaspoon polka dot mini dress $172.44
Scarves
- Use it as a parachute to play over and under
- More peekaboo!
- Dress ups: your accessory can become a pirate headscarf, cowboy bandanna or superhero cape
- Toddlers and young children love putting sheer scarves over their faces and discovering they can still see through
Have a play with:
Mercy Delta Himalaya scarf $106.75
Jangly necklaces and bracelets
As if we ever needed another excuse to throw an arm party!
- Sing songs using the jewellery as percussion instruments
- Lay jewellery on a table and bench and “draw” pictures with them. A long necklace might become a wiggly snake, river or smiling mouth, while solid bangles might become eyes or wheels.
Have a play with:
Pieces multi bracelet set $13.14
People Tree set of 6 bangles $9.85
