Why pregnant Jennifer Garner won’t wear maternity clothes

5 months into her third pregnancy, Jennifer Garner has admitted that she’s not wearing maternity clothes at the insistence of her stylist, Rachel Zoe.

The actress revealed to InStyle.com that Zoe’s own reason for eschewing maternity clothing was “…because she was so little when she was pregnant, she didn’t wear them.” So she’s now having to follow suit.

She goes on to say she expects maternity wear will still have its place:

“I have four months to go. Sooner or later, Zoe’s going to have to put me in a maternity dress. Eventually that is going to happen, but so far she has gotten her way.”

Did you wear non-maternity clothes throughout your pregnancy? And if so, what was your favourite non-maternity item?

I had a little black dress that was a loose jersey material in (I think you call it) an empire cut. It was from target, in my normal size and I wore it untill about 8 months pregnant. Loved it and thought I’d wear it after my pregnancy… but not even once LOL

But with jeans I was in maternity ones from about 3 months on….

I tried….until I was about 7 months just recently with my second (still pregnant) and I had to bring in some pregnancy tops. I can get away with some cheapy Supre maxi dresses but for tops, unless I want my belly button on view for all either through the t shirt, or as it rides up, I needed to get some ‘specialised’ wear!!!

I wore normal clothes (mainly suits for work) for the first 6 months, even tho I was getting pretty huge.  I couldn’t believe how much more comfortable I was once I finally caved and got into maternity wear.  Wow, and I suddenly looked pregnant too, everyone could see the bump rather than it being hidden underneath my normal suits (and I’m pretty small waisted normally, so its amazing how much normal clothes hide a pregnancy).

I’ve been pregnant 5 times since then, and every time, I need maternity pants before the first 12 weeks is up.

I had a great black jersey maxi from KMart that went the whole way through the pregnancy though – was so comfy, had an empire line so showed off the bump without making me look fat.  Its looking very daggy now, but great for round the house on hot days.

Anyone else disturbed by this? The fact that being so incredibly skinny that you don’t need maternity clothes is some sort of benchmark? Hey, Zoe, how about embracing the changes withing your body, because they happen for a very good reason!

Yes!!! I think even Jennifer Garner is disturbed by it – she doesnt look happy in the photo)

      • Anne At Home

I reckon she doesn’t look happy because she has paid a stylist a lot of money to put her in a dress whose length does nothing for her legs, nor do the shoes with that ankle strap to cut her off at the stumps! I don’t know much about fashion, but I know you shouldn’t wear shoes like that with bare legs unless you are a stick insect. I love maternity clothes, they are properly designed for a growing bump and most will suit breastfeeding too. If I was a celeb with an unlimited budget I’d go for it, designer maternity wear for 9 months and beyond!

I’m the same as a lot of the other mums here. Wore normal clothes until about 6 months then started having to use maternity wear. There’s some lovely on trend maternity wear out there…Especially when I went to a wedding at 38 weeks….there was no off the rack buying then! I also had trouble with length. I am nearly 6 feet tall and just found maternity wear was all about giving width and breadth, but not length.

I wore both my non-maternity and maternity stuff. I wore stretchable tops and bought those bands to cover the bottom part when my tummy got bigger.  I also wore stretchable dresses as well. The maternity wear I had were mostly jeans and pants, plus a top here and there. They used to have ugly maternity clothes then. Now, there’s so many trendier ones that are also not that expensive.

I wore a combination for entire pregnancy.

I’m totally in love with the kmart v-neck maternity shirts (they suit my body shape) so now have maybe a dozen in different colours & sleeve length, and wear them pregnant and whilst not pregnant :) .

The non-maternity clothes I wore whilst pregnant were lots of aerobics pants, cargo pants and dresses with tights.

I loved a Peter Morrissey purple stretch tube skirt that I wore pulled over my bump. I felt sexy in that skirt, which was no mean feat, being pregnant with my EnormoBaby!

I was in maternity tops early but I was showing about 8 weeks in!

I have been pregnant twice and the only maternity items I have ever worn were maternity bras, and those bonds maternity singlet tops with the drop cup.
I can’t say that I was worried about looking super stylish in my pregnacies though. I was still in a pair of my jeans until hitting the 32 week mark, but I mostly lived in a pair of bonds yoga pants because they were comfy.
My tips are to find longer fitting tops, as your bump grows the top will shorten, but it won’t matter if you have long tops because it will still cover your tummy. Elastic waists are a blessing, and most “regular” clothes have an elastic waist so it’s really simple to find skirts or pants that are outside of the maternity range.
