Awesome – yet affordable – ‘curvy mama’ outfits

Recently, I received an email from a Fox in Flats friend, Katie:

“I’m a Big Mama, literally. A size 18 on a good day, usually a 20. I’ve got a couple of major problems when it comes to dressing:

  • I work in advertising, where looking ‘right’ gains you respect (crazy as it seems). Most of the ‘larger’ fashion labels use horrible colours, and in my opinion, unflattering lines. I want classic stuff, like great jeans, a classic T and a boy blazer.
  • Another big issue I have (ha! ha!) is that larger sizes are super expensive. I can not afford $80-100 for a top.

Specifically I’m wanting help with finding great, classic shapes (not bright colourful tents!) at good prices.”

So I turned to celebrity stylist Sophia Banks-Coloma - who counts Kirstie Alley as one of her high-profile clients – for a little expert advice. In between styling on movie sets, designing her own line and dressing countless celebs, she offered this advice for Katie:

“I like this website city chic, they have cool shapes.
I think you can make some great outfits…try a blazer, skinny jeans, heels and flats, or a gorgeous maxi…”
As usual, Sophia’s advice is spot on. This site has some great classic items, and gorgeous pieces that are on-trend, but won’t break the bank.

Here are our picks of what’s on site right now:

Siren Frill Shoulder Jacket $129.95Hi Society Skinny Jean $89.95, CityChic.com.au

Lurex Striped Top $39.95, Hi Society Skinny Jean $89.95 CityChic.com.au

Team this Peacock Print Kaftan Top $69.95, with some fitted jeans like these: Hi Society Skinny Jean $89.95, CityChic.com.au

Mono Maxi $119.95

The site’s got some good basic t-shirts, and tanks for layering, and be sure to check out the Sale section for a bargain.

Ladies, help out a fellow fox! Where do you shop for awesome – yet affordable – ‘curvy mama’ pieces?

As a bigger girl (size 16/18) I’m not a fan of maxi dresses personally. I find they make us look even bigger!  I much prefer a nice wrap dress. I also hate the babydoll/empire line tops/dresses on me. Fitted (not tight!) looks much better on me than loose/flowy.

I love shapewear, not to make me look skinner, just to smooth out any roly bits under dresses :) You don’t have to spend a fortune on it, even the ones they sell at Target do a great job.

Great point Bianca & I agree – belted, or body skimming maxis look better on everyone I think – we should show off our shape, not swamp it.

I like Autograph though like all these shops sometimes their stock is better than others. Also Katies currently has some nice roomy flowing clothes that fit.

I’ve never been in a City Chic store, but I was quite impressed with their stuff from the website sneak peek I just had.  I really like that they use a plus size model, and that they have styled the models in sexy poses to celebrate those lush curves!  I even found something I’d quite like to buy – a little cropped heart printed cardigan.

There is some good stuff in there, huh.

I like Virtu for casual items. Mela Purdie clothing is beautiful (expensive but worth it) and i think go up to about a size 20. Im a size 16/18 on top and a 14/16 bottom so i have to be careful to not wear tops that make me look bigger than i am.  Apparently Big W have a plus size label now. I havnt seen the range but from what ive heard the basics are a good buy.

Oh yes, have heard Mela Purdie is lovely. Any one checked out the BigW plus size?

Try ASOS Curve range – covers sizes 18 to 26. All the advertising chicks are getting into ASOS :-) Super cool clothes, affordable and free shipping (from UK). Returns are just to a local (NSW) address, so not too much risk! Check out the size 20 skinny jeans – $49!  http://www.asos.com/au/Women/Curve/Cat/pgecategory.aspx?cid=9577

All my jeans and shorts are from city chic..it is the only place I have found nice jeans that sit at the right hight around my waist..and they always have a sale rack at the back of the store :)

    • http://twitter.com/FoxInFlats Andrea

      They look so fab!

  • Megan

I will second that ASOS is great.  I also like to have a look at the Ezibuy website – a lot of their ranges go up to size 20 (and generously so) so you don’t have to wear the ‘marginalised fat lady stuff’ ;-)

  • Jayneash

I am a 18/20. I find that you have to always be on the lookout so you can grab the bargains.

Asos is good. free shipping. So is Virtu. also free shipping. Autograph. City chic. Target is good for basic stuff. Myer has some great labels including the leona plus range. lovely wrap dresses. katies and crossroads go to a 22.

I’m 18/20 depending on the cut. I’ve been buying from Ezibuy for years. As Megan said, a lot of their regular ranges go up to 18, and they have a dedicated larger size range called Sara. This range is also stocked at David Jones.
