What’s the weirdest place you’ve breastfed?

Last night, a new TV series started on ABC called ‘The Slap’ based on Christos Tsiolkas’s book of the same name. It’s superbly acted, extremely confronting, and it feels oh-so real. You can watch it online here.
In one of the scenes, a woman breastfeeds her 5 year old son at a BBQ and in the process flashes her nipple. Last night on our Facebook page, we were sharing the weirdest places we’ve ever breastfed – and it just goes to show we are the masters of multitasking. One woman claimed to have done it ‘pushing a trolley in Coles’!

This topic has a natural segue to the issue of discretion while breastfeeding. Over here we shared some fascinating perspectives on the topic from 21 very different women, and explored some stylish options for what to wear while breastfeeding in public for added discretion.

Would love to hear your thoughts, and any tips you can share to make the whole experience easier for everyone.

And do tell…where’s the weirdest place you’ve breastfed?

I’ve fed my baby on the go in so many places, mostly using my baby wearing sling to cuddle her in and leave at least one hand free. I’ve fed while having my hair cut, on park benches, at parties, in cafes. One man humphed at me and complained to a waitress in a cafe, the waitress asked him to leave!

Clearly he was not breastfed as a baby ;) x

I’ve breastfed everywhere too & still do, though he only have two feeds a day now though, so we’re mostly at home for these. I’ve fed in a coffee shop, in front of my real estate agent while signing papers to sell our house, in church, at a park, on a bench in the middle of shopping centre……etc!! When my bubby is hungry, he’s hungry! And I’m sure people would MUCH enjoy the peace & quiet over the screaming that would happen while I search for an “appropriate” place to feed :-P I am very discreet while breastfeeding – most times you wouldn’t even know I was doing it. I think someone would have to have a pretty good look in order to see something, but if that’s the case – who’s got the issue then ;-) Breastfeeding is beautiful & natural. I just wish society would be more accepting of it :-)

Me too. One of the weirder things in life…

The first place I breastfed in public was Tigers Leagues Club. Classy! I took my baby overseas at 11 weeks old, so breastfed in aeroplanes, fast trains, the Tube (renamed the Boob Tube), the V+A, restaurants, even on the side of a motorway driving to Wales. Easiest travel ever!

      Boob Tube! Classic. x

I always used my KissKiss HugHug breastfeeding cover so I never felt awkward. I took it overseas with me on long haul flights, into conservative countries (like Dubai) and everywhere else I went with Baby #1 & Baby #2. One of the best gifts I received :) .

Wish these were around ‘back in my day’ (6 yrs ago). Great idea.

There is nothing discrete about breastfeeding twins! I had to do it at the zoo once when they were only 9 weeks old. It was a very interesting moment. I reckon I was auditioning for tits out Australia! x

      And…how’d you go??? ;)

I fed mine in the little hospital chapel at The Alfred in melbourne. It was quiet with no-one about and then suddenly two men came in for Islamic Prayer time and there I am with my boob out!! Yikes!! I was so embarrassed. I was more concerned about it than they were.

I’m sure the holy people (of whatever religion) were cool with it though ;)

    A funeral home carpark!

    • http://twitter.com/FoxInFlats Andrea

Yup, that’s a good one! At least not inside while viewing a body. Now, that’d be really weird…

At my choir rehearsals. It’s a mixed voice choir, with about 12-16 people. Between us we’ve got at least that many kids (and more on the way)! There’s alway one of the women breastfeeding. I’ve also fed at gigs, in churches during services, while browsing in bookshops…you can always find a way to feed your baby if they need it.

BTW Guys, we need more tenors, so if you fancy a bit of boob with your singing… ;)

Ba ha ha, that’s one way to recruit the dudes! Love your work Sam!

I don’t even think twice about where I am when I breastfeed. Just like your mamma in the post, I have breastfed at Coles, as well as in the park, at a funeral, on the top of a mountain in Yellowstone, whilst getting a bank account, wherever! I like to save time, so breastfeeding on the go is great to get in a feed while I’m out and doing something! Call me crazy…

      Go girl!

  • Melissaem

I’ve breastfed just about anywhere and don’t usually feel uncomfortable apart from the time I had to take and bf my 3 week old daughter at a funeral, it was either feed her or somehow sneak her, myself and my 3yr old out the door quietly which was never going to happen. I had a few nice people smile at me while I was feeding which was unexpected :)

    • http://twitter.com/FoxInFlats Andrea

Oh that is very sweet. I can see why they smiled.

  • Rachel

Where do I even begin…I can’t tell you all the places I breastfed because at least in the early days, my son breastfed everywhere and I didn’t even think about it. I’ve certainly breastfed at weddings, in parks, at the shops, at the zoo, while vacuuming, while eating, and recently on a ledge halfway up Castle Rock in the Porongurups.

Welcome!

Hi I'm Andrea, and Fox In Flats is my baby.

I'm also the mother of two little boys, who I credit for the motherhood induced fashion rut that I fell into sometime between the labour ward and now…

Here, we're sharing tips, ideas and inspiration to make it much, much easier to navigate motherhood in style.

Enjoy!
