6 style necessities so you can “sleep when they sleep”

I’ll take a punt and say that the most annoying advice any new mother might hear is to “sleep when they sleep”.

In theory it sounds great: the baby goes down for a little nap, and so do you, ending up fresh and recharged when the baby awakes.

Yet the reality of having meals to prepare (and eat!), houses to clean, clothing to wash, and other family members to care for almost always precludes that as an option.

But it pays to be prepped on the odd chance you do get to grab a bit of shut-eye when the little-one goes down.

Here are 6 style necessities to have handy so you can enjoy that speed-sleep and be ready to hit the ground running again as soon as the baby wakes:

Sleepy style

1. Keep a scarf handy to use as an impromptu pillow for wherever you manage to rest your head. Also handy for extra discretion if you’re breastfeeding, or to drape over to disguise the inevitable dribble marks you’ll get from the baby. Spoil yourself with a Cashmere scarf like this one from Artemis Wragge $355, or simply pick up a soft cotton wrap in a colour you love.

2. A lightweight sweater will keep you feeling super comfortable, and importantly, won’t crease. Modekungen sweater $117.

3. Leggings are comfy and practical, but now, they’re snug! Try the Fran Sweagging $90 by Generation Love, that are lined in fleece, for extra coziness.

4. For an instant post-nap pick-me up, mist your face with a spray like Benefit Ultra Radiance Hydrating Mist $47, which claims to ‘instantly enhance radiance’, and has a gorgeously refreshing cucumber scent.

5. You don’t want to move your baby to tears when they smell your post-nap breath, so pop a mint, or find a lip gloss with a refreshing minty flavour like Jack Black Intense Therapy Lip Balm with SPF 25 $7.50.

6. Le slipper is now le fashion. Comfy enough to wear around the home, yet they’ll look awesome when you pop out for that afternoon stroll with the baby tucked into the pram. Sam Edelman Crystal Stud Smoking Slipper $239 or shop our other slipper picks here.

What gets you looking fresh, fast after an impromptu nap?

It really its the most annoying advice isn’t it!!! Love that scarf although it may be a ‘little’ out of my budget.

Ha ha. And yes, the scarf is probably out of the budget of most people (including me!)  Let’s face it, if you can easily afford a scarf like that, you can probably also get sitters/nannies to look after the baby while you nap! ;)

For daytime napping, waterproof mascara is a must. Panda eyes is a sure sign of dishevelment (spelling?). Falling asleep on the couch usually keeps makeup and hair intact. Stuffs your neck up though!.
I can’t think of any advice more ridiculous than “sleep when they sleep” -unless the advice comes with a cooked casserole and an offer to do my laundry/cleaning and school pick up while I nap. Ha. Actually, strike that, on a par with the “sleep when they sleep” is the sure to follow “just lower your standards, the washing up can wait”. Till when exactly? Till we run out of plates? Till the cockroaches take over? I cannot relax enough to sleep during the day if there is housework to be done. And there is always housework to be done.

Ba ha ha, soooooo true! Why do people say these things?!

Sleep when they sleep totally worked for me – am I the only one?!  I would get up with him in the morning, like 6am, do the feed and play and change, and then when he went back to bed in the morning, so would I.  This worked really well for the first 6 weeks or so (especially as I was recovering from a caesar too).  When he got a few months older and was having two-three day sleeps, I would have one for housework, one for me time.  Gods, I missed that me time when he went to one sleep! :)

I had a chronic illness for a few years, and would have regular day sleeps just to keep up with the rest of the day!  My tips from this time would definitely be the facial spritz (and a mint!) to freshen up, throw a silk scarf over your sofa cushions so you don’t get face creases or mooshed up hair.  A lip and cheek creme in a mirrored compact (BECCA is my favourite) gives you a little bit of colour, and YSL Touche Eclat can do no wrong!

I tweeted a picture of my favourite thing for today.  Funnily enough, it’s a cashmere scarf.  It was a present from the Welshman, when he was my boyf.  It must be 13 years old but I still wear it every day it is remotely cool enough to get away with a cashmere scarf!  I have no idea how much it was, but it is Burberry, so not cheap.  I would never have bought it myself, but it has turned out to be a fab investment.

The most annoying comment I had was from an aunti who walked in to see my newborn. fisrt thing she said to me was “have you got milk?” And she was not looking for a cup of tea either. I was appalled.
