Say “Backpack!”

I don’t mind saying “Backpack!” for Dora the Explorer every now and then to open that magic satchel of hers. She’s cool. And nice. Even to that sneaky fox, Swiper.

Until now I’ve outright refused to buy a backpack of my own, as they look kinda dorky, and I’m pretty sure mine won’t be magic.

But I’m backtracking now as fashion is welcoming back the rucksack with open arms. Two of them.

Seen recently on the runways at Alexander Wang, Louis Vuitton and Marc Jacobs, backpacks are an emerging trend for 2011.

Backpacks at Louis Vuitton

These backpacks aren’t like the big square nylon ones your kids have for school.

Nor do they resemble the grimy one you lugged backpacking around Europe in search of a swarthy Italian and a cheap beer.

Bringin’ it back.

The backpack trend today is soft and slouchy, with Y-shaped, dropped straps and feature leather trims, military influences or Aztec fabrics, as seen on Rachel Bilson at Coachella.

These bags are well equipped with pouch pockets for your phone, keys and the myriad of items you need when you are with your kids, so they make a fresh – and hands free – option as a diaper bag.

Style tips:

  • Never, ever wear both straps on your back. Toss the backpack casually over one shoulder.
  • Wear with florals, maxiskirts and oversized shirtdresses.
  • Avoid hooded jumpers, it will all look too slouchy.

Here are our online pics, to help you say “Backpack!”

“Yum yum yum yum yum, ¡delicioso!”

You make me laugh! Oh…and have convinced me that there’s no point fighting the fact that the backpack is back…

Thanks Clare. I too have been resisting until now. It’s all a bit ‘Clueless’ and 90210 (original version).
Speaking of..how is your back? Hope it is better. x

So funny that I hear wafting in from the loungeroom… “Backpack, backpack. Backpack, backpack.” I remain unconvinced however. All those fake Prada backpacks in the early 90s did my head in.

      Am hearing you.
An ex-boyfriend gave me a backpack in the 90s. He was since christened ‘Satan’, as was said backpack. A long time has passed though, and I’d go there again. The bag. Not Satan.

I worked the backpack look hard in the 80′s and 90′s.  Now I have an Esprit slouch bag from last year and love it.  But it’s so full of junk that after a day wearing it my back and neck just ache.  I’d so love a backpack, but it’s too tempting to wear both straps and avoid the pain.  Which to choose – look daggy or feel comfy?  Or maybe just clear out the excess rubbish from the tardis I’m carrying now.  What to do.  Nice backpacks though.  (P.S. – having a 6 year old boy means we’ve bypassed Dora, but he found a red sleeveless puffy vest in Big W the other day, and hey presto – it’s Diego!)

Oh Al I try to remain open minded, but to the double strap back pack I say “don’t do it”. Unless you are Gisele, in which case you could wear it on your head and you would still look great.
If you don’t think you can resist I’d avoid the bag altogether. :) x

I have a small tannish color leather backpack I love using in the summer, its a very casual option but so nice when running around after the kids.
