I don’t mind saying “Backpack!” for Dora the Explorer every now and then to open that magic satchel of hers. She’s cool. And nice. Even to that sneaky fox, Swiper.

Until now I’ve outright refused to buy a backpack of my own, as they look kinda dorky, and I’m pretty sure mine won’t be magic.
But I’m backtracking now as fashion is welcoming back the rucksack with open arms. Two of them.
Seen recently on the runways at Alexander Wang, Louis Vuitton and Marc Jacobs, backpacks are an emerging trend for 2011.
These backpacks aren’t like the big square nylon ones your kids have for school.
Nor do they resemble the grimy one you lugged backpacking around Europe in search of a swarthy Italian and a cheap beer.
Bringin’ it back.
The backpack trend today is soft and slouchy, with Y-shaped, dropped straps and feature leather trims, military influences or Aztec fabrics, as seen on Rachel Bilson at Coachella.
These bags are well equipped with pouch pockets for your phone, keys and the myriad of items you need when you are with your kids, so they make a fresh – and hands free – option as a diaper bag.
Style tips:
- Never, ever wear both straps on your back. Toss the backpack casually over one shoulder.
- Wear with florals, maxiskirts and oversized shirtdresses.
- Avoid hooded jumpers, it will all look too slouchy.
Here are our online pics, to help you say “Backpack!”

As Dora would say:
